Tanning ledges are one of the most popular features we build — and one of the most overlooked when it comes to maintenance. Because the water is extremely shallow, algae and buildup happen faster than in the main pool.
Why tanning ledges need special attention
Shallow water heats up faster in direct sunlight, which accelerates algae growth. There's also less water movement and circulation compared to the main pool, which means chemicals don't reach it as effectively.
Brush it daily during swim season
Get in the habit of quickly brushing your tanning ledge every day or two. Algae starts as a thin slippery film before it turns visible green. Brushing breaks it up before it takes hold.
Check chlorine levels at the ledge specifically
Sunlight burns off chlorine faster in shallow water. Your main pool might read fine while your tanning ledge is depleted. Use a test strip directly on the ledge surface area.
Position your return jets toward the ledge
If possible, angle one of your return jets to push circulation toward the tanning ledge. Moving water is much harder for algae to grow in than still water.
Use a phosphate remover monthly
Phosphates are algae food and they tend to concentrate in shallow warm water. A monthly phosphate remover treatment keeps algae from getting a foothold.
Keep it brushed after rain
Rainwater washes pollen, dirt, and organic material into the pool — and it settles on the shallow ledge first. Brush and check chemistry after any significant rainfall.
