7 Things to Look for When Hiring a Pool Builder

Not all pool builders are the same. Here are the 7 things every Alabama homeowner should check before signing a contract with a pool company.

Building a pool is one of the largest investments you'll make in your home. Choosing the wrong builder can mean delays, cost overruns, quality problems — or worse, a contractor who disappears mid-project.

After 25+ years building pools in Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, here's what we tell every homeowner to look for.

1. Verify Their Alabama Contractor's License

In Alabama, pool builders are required to hold a valid contractor's license. You can verify any contractor's license on the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors website. Never hire an unlicensed pool builder — if something goes wrong, you have little legal recourse. Backyard Creations holds AL License #50319.

2. Ask Who Actually Does the Work

Many pool companies act as general contractors and subcontract the critical work — excavation, plumbing, shotcrete — to whoever is cheapest. This means less quality control and nobody truly accountable for the finished product. Ask specifically: "Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?" At Backyard Creations, our in-house crew handles everything.

3. Check Reviews and Ask for References

Google reviews are a good starting point, but also ask the builder for references from completed projects in the last 1–2 years. A reputable builder will happily connect you with past customers. Be cautious of companies with few reviews or reviews that all sound similar.

4. Look at Their Portfolio

Any experienced builder should have a portfolio of completed pools. Look for quality and variety — not just pretty marketing photos, but real finished pools. Ask to see projects similar in size and style to what you want.

5. Understand What's Included in the Quote

Pool quotes can be misleading. Make sure you understand exactly what's included: excavation, plumbing, electrical, equipment, coping, decking, startup chemicals, and any permits. Get everything in writing and compare apples to apples across quotes.

6. Ask About the Timeline and Communication

A good builder gives you a realistic timeline and communicates proactively throughout the project. Ask how they handle delays, who your point of contact is, and how often you'll receive updates. Vague answers are a red flag.

7. Make Sure They Offer a Warranty

Ask what warranty coverage is provided on the structure, equipment, and workmanship. A builder who stands behind their work will have clear warranty terms. One who avoids the question probably isn't confident in what they're building.

The Bottom Line

The cheapest quote is rarely the best value. Focus on experience, licensing, transparency, and who is actually building your pool. If you're in the greater Birmingham area or anywhere in Alabama, we'd love to earn your business. Call 205-965-1902 for a free consultation.
